Hoop Heaven: Seven local basketball teams win

Forget for a moment that the Flyers lost the Winter Classic. Forget for another moment that the Eagles are out of the playoffs. Forget that spring training is six weeks (hey, it's only six weeks) away. Forget about all that because Wednesday was about basketball. Each Philly team won. Here's a recap:

Temple stuns No. 5 Duke
Up three with five minutes to go, Owls guard Khalif Wyatt drilled consecutive three-pointers to put Temple up 66-57 en route to a 78-73 shocker over No. 5 Duke. Wyatts 22 points led five Owls in double-figures as Temple beat Duke for the first time since 1996.

It was a statement win for the Owls and the fans knew it, storming the court as time expired at a sold-out Wells Fargo Center.

Sixers rally to beat Hornets
The Sixers outscored the Hornets 34-20 in the fourth quarter to win, 101-93, and finish up a season-opening five-game road trip 3-2. Jrue Holiday scored 14 of his game-high 23 points in the final frame and assisted on eight buckets. Evan Turner scored 21 points on 12 shots off the bench and Spencer Hawes turned in another solid line, going for 17 points, seven rebounds and four blocks.

Only the Heat (plus-12.6) and Bulls (plus-10.6) have a better point differential than the Sixers (plus-9.8).

St. Joes wins in overtime
C.J. Aikens layup with 1:32 left in overtime gave Saint Josephs an 84-82 lead that it wouldnt relinquish. The Hawks came all the way back from down 16 to tie the game, 78-78, with six seconds remaining. Langston Galloway and Carl Jones combined for 37 points.

La Salle topples Xavier
La Salle picked up a huge win in its Atlantic-10 opener, beating Xavier 80-70 at Tom Gola Arena. Earl Pettis had 23 points and Ramon Galloway had 16 for Dr. John Giannini's squad, which beat the Musketeers for the first time in six tries.

Xavier stud Tu Holloway was just 2 of 12 from the field and 0 for 5 in the first half.

Drexel picks up historic win vs. Towson
Drexel crushed Towson, 60-27, allowing the fewest points since joining Division-I and the fewest ever in a Colonial Athletic Association game. The Dragons, paced by Samme Givens 18 points, are 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the CAA. Towson has lost 34 consecutive games, tying the longest streak ever by a D-I team (Sacramento State).

Rosen bests coach in win vs. Lafayette
By picking up four assists in Penns 78-73 win over Lafayette, Zack Rosen moved past his coach, Jerome Allen, into first all-time on the Penn leaderboard.

Lafayette made it a one-point game with 21 seconds to go, but the four free throws of Rosen and Tyler Bernardini (17 points) sealed the deal.

Delaware nips Hofstra
Not to be out-done on this night, the Blue Hens got by the Pride in dramatic fashion, 67-66, at home. Jamelle Hagins had 21 points and 18 rebounds for Delaware, putting the Hens ahead by a point with a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left in the second half.

Hofstras Shemiye McLendon could have tied the game by making two free throws with two seconds to go, but the second foul shot was no good.
