Paterno Statue Down, ‘Unprecedented' Penalties to Come for Penn State?

In the wake of Penn State's swift Sunday morning removal of the Joe Paterno statue that has stood outside Beaver Stadium for the past decade, CBS is reporting that the NCAA will announce "unprecedented" penalties for the school and its football program on Monday.
CBS's report has no specific details yet, but the announcement is expected to come at 9 AM tomorrow. Many are wondering if the program will be assessed the NCAA's misleadingly dubbed "death penalty."
Joe Schad of ESPN does not believe that will not be the case, but the program could be facing the loss of bowls and scholarships, and the sanctions could be more damaging than a one-year ban.
Given that just about everything pertaining to this scandal has been without precedent, nothing at this point is shocking. The effects of Monday's decision will be substantially felt by countless people in a variety of ways though, from the players, coaches, and staff to fans, local businesses, and even detractors.
The statue is down, but the lightning rod of Penn State football may not be something that is removable.
