A bevy of returning players has La Salle is position to build on its 2012-13 success. But D.J. Peterson won’t be a part of the Explorers’ follow-up season to a Sweet 16 run. The sophomore guard will transfer, the school announced Monday.

Peterson, a Minnesota native, wants to continue his college career closer to home.

“D.J. has made a great contribution to our program over the last two years,” head coach Dr. John Giannini said in a statement. “We greatly value his toughness, unselfishness and winning ways. … We will always think positively of D.J.”

Peterson started 18 of the 34 games he appeared in last season. The 6-foot-5, 190-pounder averaged 3.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per game, and was La Salle’s second best shooter from distance, at 40 percent.

Peterson started all four NCAA tournament games for the Explorers and averaged 25.5 minutes. He had four rebounds and four assists in a two-point win over Ole Miss that sent La Salle to the Sweet 16.
