PLAYOFF TIME?What time is a good time to clinch? Really, it depends on the team, theories are everywhere different for every team and player. For the Phillies, I believe clinching the division early could be good for a team trying to repeat as World Series Champs. The Phillies could have the opportunity to set up their rotation and be ready to defend. For example, set the rotation as Lee, Blanton, Hamels and Happ. Where other teams that may have to battle to the end do not get that luxury...their aces may not be able to go in game one because of rest issues. The starters should be refreshed and ready to go. The everyday starters will be able to get some rest in the last 10 days or so, resting some aches and pains. These guys go through a grueling 6 months that seem to not end. These everyday players must find a way to still stay focused if they take some days late, it could be a tough balance for Charlie Manuel, keeping them fresh and focused at the same time...You dont want to come out flat in the post season. The bully could finally get some work on mechanics in this time frame. A tough place to really keep things in check... a bullpenner doesnt get to work a lot on the mechanic aspect in the season because they get thrown in the fire without much warning, things for a reliever could get out of whack quickly. The guys who need innings will be sure to see some late this season. The bench players will almost surely get some much needed at bats. Matt Stairs for one would enjoy that. The motto stay hot, stay healthy! |
