Pedro Martinez Is Enjoying Life, Loves Fishing: Our Chat with Pedro

"How's the Big Sexy?! Tell the Big Sexy I miss him."

That was the first thing Pedro Martinez said to me with a big smile on his face as he shook my hand before I even had a chance to introduce myself. The Big Sexy, of course, is Pedro's nickname for Ryan Howard. I tried arguing that fans like to call him the Big Piece or Big Brown, but Pedro was having none of that, "I miss the Big Sexy."

That was the general tone of Pedro's thoughts on the Phillies organization, the players, and the fans. He misses being in the game, but at the same time, he's an awfully happy guy out of it. He repeatedly mentioned a promise made to his kids and that he's enjoying spending time with them.

As we walked through the Times Square Planet Hollywood, Pedro danced and did a little air guitar after seeing all of the music memorabilia hanging on the wall. Based on his downright happy attitude, you wouldn't have guessed he was on a media tour. ESPN, the Associated Press, the New York Times, The700Level.com, all the big hitters.

Martinez was in New York to help promote the Gillette Fusion ProGlide Ultimate Summer Job program. I forgot to ask him if Gillette makes any hair products similar to Soul Glo.

"I got one of those," Pedro said as I pulled out my flip camera to record our conversation. He said it just like a kid who was proud of a new toy he got on Christmas. So what would Pedro Martinez need a flip camera for? "Fishing, my kids, I like fishing a lot. A LOT. I have a couple boats," he said.

So instead of throwing from the mound, he's been throwing lines in the water.

As far as pitching again, Pedro said he hasn't thrown in about a month but says the itch is always there. "Once you play baseball, you always have the itch. You always want to go and play. Right now, there are things that are really important to me. After I made the promise to the kids, I don't want to let them down. I'll have to see how I feel after they go back to school," he said.

Later in the conversation, however, when I brought up the "year of the pitcher," Pedro said matter of factly, " I could pitch. I could pitch right now if I wanted to. I'd just have to say yes to a team."

Pedro's career as one of the most dominant players in the game may be over, but he's never going to lose that swagger.

Basic Function

This position will work closely with the Vice President of Sales in generating revenue through commercial advertisements and sponsorship sales. The intern will gain first-hand sales experience through working with Sales Assistants and AEs on pitches, sales-calls and recapping material.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist Account Executive on preparation of Sales Presentations
• Cultivate new account leads for local sales

• Assist as point of contact with sponsors on game night set up and pre-game hospitality elements.
• Assist with collection of all proof of performance materials.
• Perform Competitive Network Analysis
• Update Customer database
• Other various projects as assigned

Requirements

1. Good oral and written communication skills.
2. Knowledge of sports.
3. Ability to work non-traditional hours, weekends & holidays
4. Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
5. Must be 19 years of age or older
6. Must be a student in pursuit of an Associate, Bachelor, Master or Juris Doctor degree
7. Must have unrestricted authorization to work in the US
8. Must have sophomore standing or above

Sixers to play on new court design, wear special City Edition jerseys with old school bell

The Sixers announced on Wednesday morning that they'll be unveiling their fourth edition jersey in the near future to be worn on seven tribute nights with a "Spirit of 76" theme to them.

It will include a bell logo on both the jerseys and at center court of the Wells Fargo Center.

"'Spirit of 76,' introduces a new 'bell' logo, inspired by imagery from Philadelphia's 1976 bicentennial celebration, a special center-court logo signed by 76ers full season ticket members, collectible tickets and membership boxes for season ticket members," the team said in a statement.

The team will also unveil three new sculptures at their Camden training facility to go along with the campaign.

“We are excited to announce the ‘Spirit of 76’ campaign as it provides another incredible opportunity to celebrate the proud tradition of the 76ers with the city of Philadelphia, our fans, players and alumni,” said Philadelphia 76ers Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Chris Heck. “The ‘Spirit of 76’ campaign honors the legendary icons who paved the way for this organization, while recognizing the passion and intensity of our fans.”

The City Edition jerseys will join the Association Edition (home), Icon Edition (road), and Statement Edition jerseys this season.
