CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Sixers on Friday waived veteran shooting guard Gerald Henderson.

The deadline for the team to decide if they would pick up his $9 million contract for next season was Friday.

Henderson averaged 9.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists over 23.2 minutes in his first and only season with the Sixers. He shot 42.4 percent from the field and tied his career-best 35.3 three-point percentage.

Henderson played 72 games. He started in 41 as the Sixers changed their starting two-guard, eventually going with rookie Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot toward the end of the season.

The eight-year veteran played through hip soreness throughout the season. Henderson had two hip surgeries in 2011 and 2015.

The Sixers signed the local Episcopal Academy product last summer in part for veteran leadership. Henderson, 29, was vocal with his younger teammates and also served as an example of professionalism.

The Sixers currently have Luwawu-Cabarrot and Nik Stauskas under contract at the shooting guard position. No. 1 pick Markelle Fultz and Jerryd Bayless also can play off the ball at the two-spot.

That same day Henderson was waived, reports emerged claiming shooting guard Furkan Korkmaz will leave Turkey and play for the Sixers next season. According to a source, the Sixers are working on the details of his FIBA clearance and buyout (see story). Korkmaz coming to the NBA next season "very well may happen," per the source.
