Eagles Injury Update: Sproles, Vaitai out Sunday; Barbre questionable

After not practicing this week, Eagles right tackle Allen Barbre (hamstring) is listed as questionable going into Sunday’s game in Baltimore.

Meanwhile, Darren Sproles (concussion) and Halapoulivaati Vaitai (knee) have been ruled out.

Barbre did not practice all week and will be a game-time decision on Sunday in Baltimore. Pederson said there’s a possibility of Barbre being a backup or emergency player against the Ravens if he’s not fully healed.

If Barbre can’t play, the Eagles will start rookie Isaac Seuamlo at right tackle, making him the fifth right tackle the team will have used this season (see story)

“He’s been great in practice, he’s smooth, he’s athletic, smart,” Pederson said of Seumalo. “He understands the schemes. Obviously, the live reps Sunday, we’ll find out. But he’s done a good job this week.”

When the Eagles drafted Seumalo in the third round out of Oregon State, they envisioned him as a guard/center, but knew he had played some tackle in college.

“He’s very capable of handing it,” Pederson said. “It’s just a different position. You’re more on an island and more 1-on-1 blocks. But he’s had a great week and ready to go.”

In addition to Barbre, Brent Celek (stinger), Dorial Green-Beckham (abdomen), Jordan Matthews (ankle) and Kamu Grugier-Hill (illness) are also listed as questionable. But it seems like all of them will be able to play.

With Sproles out for the game and with Wendell Smallwood on IR, the Eagles will head into Sunday’s game with three running backs: Ryan Mathews, Kenjon Barner and Byron Marshall.

Marshall was just called up from the practice squad earlier this week (see story).

Will Marshall have an extensive role this Sunday?

“It’s possible,” Pederson said. “Sometimes you don’t really know until you get into the game and how you want to use him. He’s very capable and understands our offense very well. It’s one of the reasons why we brought him up. He’s been in our meetings all year. He’s listened to the terminology. He’s seen the guys in front of him play. So  a lot of confidence in him getting reps in the game.”

Pederson said Barner and Marshall will help fill the void left by Sproles and the head coach doesn’t plan on limiting the playbook.

Barner will return punts for the Eagles on Sunday.
