BOX SCORE

BOSTON -- New daddy Steve Mason seems to be in midseason form just in time for the start of the regular season.

The Flyers' goaltender, whose fiancée gave birth to daughter Emma Rae Mason on Thursday, made 22 saves in a 1-0 overtime loss to the Boston Bruins in the preseason finale for both teams at TD Garden.

The Flyers finished the preseason with a 4-2-2 record.

The game was a last chance for several Flyers players, including 19-year-old rookies Travis Konecny and Ivan Provorov, to make their case for a spot on the roster against a loaded Bruins lineup. Boston had no fewer than 10 forwards and four defensemen who are expected to make the team, and also No. 1 goaltender Tuukka Rask.

But Mason, who missed a game on Thursday and then returned to practice Friday, outshined all the Flyers. With the game on the line, he robbed Boston forward Brad Marchand at 13:55 of the third period after a Provorov turnover right in front of the Flyers’ goal. Mason stoned Marchand on a point-blank shot attempt.

Mason had to make 10 saves in the first period, including several tough chances. Early in the second period he had to extinguish a shorthanded 2-on-1 that ended with Marchand setting up Patrice Bergeron. But Mason made the save. He made three saves in the second period.

Notable goals
Mason was great all night and stopped a Bergeron wraparound in overtime. But when Ryan Spooner got loose on a breakaway, he scored the only goal of the game with 2:48 elapsed in the extra session.

Power play
The Flyers power play was 0 for 2 and finished the preseason 5 for 33. The Flyers only landed two shots on Rask with the man-advantage.

The Flyers first unit featured Shayne Gostisbehere and Jakub Voracek on the points with Giroux, Wayne Simmonds and Nick Cousins up front. Cousins filled the spot usually held by Brayden Schenn.

The second group had Mark Streit and Provorov on the points, and Dale Weise, Sean Couturier and Konecny up front.

Penalty kill
The Flyers killed all four of Boston’s power plays. The Flyers finished the preseason 29 for 31 on the penalty kill in the preseason.

On the Flyers’ second penalty kill Vandevelde, who’s fighting for a roster spot, had a great scoring chance. He pressured Bruins forward Austin Czarnik, stripped the puck and skated end to end before having his wrist shot stopped by Rask.

Early in the third period Couturier had a shorthanded chance from the right hash mark but was stopped by Rask.

Sin bin
Flyers defenseman Radko Gudas was charged with boarding 5:47 into the third period, but he might hear from the NHL Department of Player safety.

Gudas, who earlier this week escaped supplementary discipline for his hit on New York Rangers forward Jimmy Vesey, caught Czarnik in the face with a shoulder. Czarnik left the game and did not return.

Fight card
Couturier, who had just two fighting majors in the regular season last year, held his own in a first-period bout against Boston forward David Backes.

Couturier and Backes both stayed upright until they tired out and the linesmen broke up the bout. Couturier actually started the fight in response to a hard hit Backes laid on Voracek along the right wall in the Boston zone. Voracek got up on his own accord and stayed in the game.

Couturier earned an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which the Flyers killed, in addition to the fighting major.

Notable Flyers scratches
Healthy: Schenn, Roman Lyubimov, Jordan Weal

Injured: Brandon Manning (upper body), Scott Laughton (lower body), Michael Del Zotto (left knee)

Scratch before suspension
Schenn did not suit up against the Bruins and will now serve the three-game suspension he earned in Game 6 of the Flyers’ first-round series against the Washington Capitals in April. Schenn was penalized for charging Capitals forward T.J. Oshie.
