BOX SCORE

The Flyers won 10 straight, lost a game they didn’t deserve to win and then lost another they richly deserved to win.

That was the instant backdrop to NBC's Wednesday Night Rivalry contest featuring the Flyers and the Washington Capitals.

It was another close one, too, as the Flyers won 3-2 in the shootout. Wayne Simmonds scored the game-winner.

Alex Ovechkin didn't get a shot in the game until the final seconds of regulation.

This was the Flyers’ final home game before the Christmas break, which begins on Friday for the team.

Notable goals
Andre Burakovsky’s goal in the first period was his first goal in 26 games. He had two in the Caps’ season opener.

50th anniversary jerseys
The Flyers were 4-4 coming into the game when wearing their 50th anniversary jersey.

Milestone
This was Simmonds’ 400th game as a Flyer.

Goalie report
Steve Mason had an outstanding save on Justin Williams in the final six minutes of the first period. Mason finished the night with 36 saves.

Power play
Not looking good. Again. The Flyers came into play 0 for 11 over the previous four games. They didn’t have a single shot on their first chance of the game either with two giveaways. The Flyers were even worse on the second PP, overshooting the net twice and having the puck cleared three times.

Penalty kill
The Flyers didn’t have to kill a penalty until the final 1:48 of regulation.

Ended
Michael Raffl ended his five-game skid without a point with a goal that made it 1-1 in the second period off a wraparound against Brayden Holtby.

Scratches
Defenseman Nick Schultz (healthy) and Mark Streit (left shoulder), forwards Boyd Gordon (healthy), Sean Couturier (left knee) and Matt Read (oblique pull) and goalie Michal Neuvirth (left knee).

Up next
It’s the ninth and final back-to-back before the Christmas break as the Flyers head to New Jersey to face the Devils on Thursday night in Newark.
