The Phils made it a two-run game in the top of the sixth, but Jeanmar Gomez walked the leadoff man and he eventually scored on a double by Nick Markakis as the Braves went back up by three.

Atlanta's Jason Grilli survived a nervous ninth inning for his ninth save. He allowed a two-out RBI hit to Darin Ruf before striking out Odubel Herrera looking with two men on base to end the game.

At the plate
Ryan Howard led off the sixth with his team-high fifth home run. It was the 50th of his career in 161 games against Atlanta and 21st at Turner Field. It was the first of three runs the Phils scored in the frame as they cut the Braves’ lead to 6-4. Jeff Francoeur (pinch-hit single) and Ben Revere (double) also drove in runs with two-out hits in the inning.

Revere had a career-high three doubles. He added a single in the ninth for a four-hit night.

Howard had three hits to raise his average to .220.

Cody Asche hit third and struck out four times.

For the second night in a row, the Braves got a first-inning home run, this one from Andrelton Simmons, and never trailed. Simmons had three hits and scored three runs.
