MIAMI — The Phillies lost more than a game on Tuesday night.
Right-hander Vince Velasquez, the pitcher with the most upside on the starting staff, left the game, a 7-2 loss to the Miami Marlins, in the second inning with an elbow injury that will send him to the disabled list (see story).
Velasquez's injury was the latest setback in a month of May that has been filled with ugly losses. The Phillies are 6-21 in the month and have lost 10 straight series for the first time since 1997.
Marlins pitching held the Phillies to two hits. Over the last 10 games, the Phils have been held to four or fewer hits six times.
Overall, the Phils have lost 24 of 30.
The Phils have the worst record in the majors at 17-33.

Starting pitching report
Velasquez's velocity dropped by more than four mph in the second inning. He gave up a home run and a double in the inning and was gone one batter later.
He took the loss to fall to 2-5.
Marlins starter Justin Nicolino also had a short night. He held the Phillies hitless for three innings but departed with a thumb injury suffered while bunting.
Bullpen report
Mark Leiter Jr. picked up Velasquez in the second inning and was hit hard. He allowed five runs. One was unearned.
Dustin McGowan pitched three innings of one-run relief and got the win.
At the plate
Howie Kendrick drove a long home run to center field for one of the Phillies' hits and their first run. The Phillies parlayed three walks and a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning into their second run.
The Marlins had 10 hits. Marcell Ozuna had three of them. Giancarlo Stanton belted a two-run homer.
In the field
Catcher Cameron Rupp contributed to the Marlins' five-run third inning with a throwing error.
