SAN FRANCISCO -- Cody Asche belted a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth inning and scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th as the Phillies rallied from a three-run deficit to beat the San Francisco Giants, 5-3, at AT&T Park on Friday night.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Phillies.
Asche led off the 10th with a double and scored the tie-breaking run when Chase Utley was hit (grazed is more like it) on the right knee by a pitch with the bases loaded. Ryan Howard followed with a sacrifice fly.
The attendance at one of baseball’s best and most exciting venues was 41,425. It was the Giants’ 308th consecutive sellout.
Starting pitching report
Cole Hamels allowed a three-run homer to Michael Morse with no outs in the fourth inning. They were the only runs he gave up in seven innings.
Entering the start, Hamels had pitched at least seven innings and not allowed more than a run in five straight starts.
Giants’ lefty Madison Bumgarner pitched a gem, holding the Phillies to one run over seven hits. He allowed four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out nine.
Bullpen report
Ken Giles pitched two scoreless innings for the Phillies and Jonathan Papelbon nailed down his 28th save.
Giants’ lefty Jeremy Affeldt gave up Asche’s game-tying home run. He had not given up a home run all season and hadn’t allowed one to a left-handed hitter since April 2011.
Another Giants’ lefty, Javy Lopez, hit Utley with a pitch with the bases loaded in the 10th to force home the go-ahead run.
At the plate
Marlon Byrd smacked his 23rd home run in the fifth inning. The Phillies tied the game in the top of the eighth on a two-run home run by Asche. Darin Ruf, who singled and doubled on the night, had led off the inning with a single.
Buster Posey (single) and Pablo Sandoval (double) were on base for Morse’s homer in the fourth.
On the bases
Jimmy Rollins ran into the second out of the fourth inning on a baserunning blunder and it helped short-circuit a potential rally.
In the field
Howard was not charged with any errors at first base, but he made a poor throw on a fielder’s choice and dropped a pop up in foul territory that was ruled a no play.
In a big play, Phillies rightfielder Byrd gunned down Sandoval at the plate as he tried to score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
