TAMPA, Fla. -- Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says he doesn't know if injured captain Derek Jeter will be available to play for New York on opening day.

The shortstop received an anti-inflammatory injection in his surgically repaired left ankle and missed his second straight spring game on Wednesday.

"At this stage, I just don't know, so all I can do is acknowledge it's a possibility," Cashman said when asked if Jeter would be ready for opening day.

Cashman says he doesn't' know when Jeter would resume playing in spring games. The shortstop was removed from the lineup against Philadelphia on Tuesday for "precautionary" reasons because his ankle felt stiff (see full story).

Dodgers await Ramirez MRI results
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez could be sidelined for more than two months or maybe just two weeks because of an injured left thumb.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly says doctors have described both recovery scenarios for Ramirez. The All-Star was set to have an MRI when he returns to the Dodgers' camp on Wednesday.

Ramirez was hurt diving for a ball at third base Tuesday night in the championship game of the World Baseball Classic. He stayed in the game and helped the Dominican Republic beat Puerto Rico 3-0 for the title.

Luis Cruz, who was projected to play third base, started at shortstop Wednesday against Kansas City. Mattingly said Cruz would the first choice at shortstop if Ramirez is out for a while (see full story).

Greinke feels fine after test
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke threw four innings in a minor league game Wednesday without any trouble in his tender right elbow.

Greinke had not pitched in 2 weeks because of discomfort in his elbow. The righty had a platelet-rich plasma injection to help his recovery.

Greinke threw 42 pitches against minor leaguers from the Chicago White Sox.

The former Cy Young winner signed a $147 million, six-year contract with the Dodgers as a free agent in the offseason. He has pitched in just two major league spring-training games for a total of five innings.

If there are no setbacks, Greinke would start April 5 at home against Pittsburgh (see full story).
