My favorite Charlie Manuel memory: Jimmy Rollins

Share

Jimmy Rollins and Charlie Manuel accomplished a lot during their time in Philadelphia together.

They helped the Phillies claim five consecutive NL East titles from 2007-2011 and were instrumental in bringing a World Series championship back to the city in 2008.

But there was one thing Rollins always looked forward to when the Phils would arrive for spring training in Florida during Manuel's tenure as manager.

"What I really enjoyed about spring training was hearing Charlie's speech," Rollins said. "You never knew what you were gonna get, but you knew at some point it was gonna turn comical, whether he was talking about himself, talking about somebody, getting stuck, having to look at his notepad that never had anything on it, so I don't know why he had the notepad up there. He let me get away with making fun of him during that time, getting the room up in roars and laughter, but it was all in good fun."

Before Rollins and the Phillies take on the Mets this Saturday, Manuel will be inducted into the team's Wall of Fame. It's one of the many festivities the Phils have planned for their annual Alumni Weekend.

A segment "The Book of Manuel" is running all week on SportsNet Central, featuring favorite Manuel memories from his former players, coaches and colleagues.

Juan Samuel, Ruben Amaro Jr. and Chase Utley have already provided their favorite memories of Manuel.
