NBA Notes: Heat bring back troubled Beasley

MIAMI -- The Miami Heat have re-signed Michael Beasley, who spent the first two years of his up-and-down career with the team and became a free agent when the Phoenix Suns bought him out earlier this month.

Beasley was the No. 2 pick in the 2008 draft by the Heat, and averaged 14.3 points in those two seasons. He then was traded to Minnesota in 2010, and signed with Phoenix as a free agent.

Heat President Pat Riley says the team decided that Beasley "can help us."

Beasley was arrested earlier this offseason in Arizona on charges of felony marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. It was the latest in a series of incidents involving the drug that have plagued his NBA career (see full story).

Knicks: Kidd teases Anthony about free agency
NEW YORK -- Carmelo Anthony can't avoid free agency talk, even from his friends.

He and Jason Kidd were posing for photographers at a Sept. 11 charity event Wednesday when Kidd, his former teammate and now the Brooklyn Nets' coach, asked Anthony if all the attention was for his announcement that he was going to Los Angeles.

If anyone else wants to bring up Anthony's status beyond this season, they'd better do it soon. Once the New York Knicks start practice, he stops the discussion.

He says "I'm just not going to do it."

Anthony and Kidd were among the athletes and entertainers who took part in a fundraiser in commemoration of the 658 Cantor Fitzgerald employees lost in the World Trade Center attacks (see full story).

Knicks: Chris Smith, Toure' Murry sign
NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks have signed guards Chris Smith and Toure' Murry.

Smith is the younger brother of Knicks guard J.R. Smith, the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year. Chris Smith, who helped Louisville reach the 2012 Final Four, was on the Knicks' roster in the preseason last year before getting hurt and waived before the regular season.

Murry helped lead Rio Grande to the NBA Development League championship last season before playing on the Knicks' summer league entry in July (see full story).
