BOX SCORE

ATLANTA -- The Phillies scored four times in the 10th inning against three Atlanta relievers and snapped their six-game losing streak on Sunday with a 4-0 victory over the Braves at Turner Field.

The Phils loaded the bases against reliever Nick Masset to open the 10th. Odubel Herrera singled, Cesar Hernandez singled and Maikel Franco walked. Ryan Howard, facing a lefty reliever Dana Eveland, hit the game-winning sacrifice fly to right. It was Howard’s 38th RBI of the season and the 141st of his career against Atlanta

Carlos Ruiz drove home two insurance runs with a double and Freddy Galvis drove in a run with a single.

Reliever Luis Garcia (3-3) was the winning pitcher and Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth in a non-save situation.

The Phillies (28-56) are now 10-31 on the road. They are 4-5 against the Braves, 2-4 at Turner Field.

Starting pitching report
Cole Hamels provided the sort of effort the Phillies needed. The veteran left-hander pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing six hits and striking out six, but failed to break a winless streak that dates back to May 23.

The Braves loaded the bases in the first inning but failed to score against Hamels. That bucked quite a trend: Phils have had first-inning troubles all year, allowing 67 runs and a 6.94 ERA in the opening frame.

From that point Hamels was exceptional. He allowed only two other runners to reach second base and none to reach third. He had Chris Johnson picked off in the sixth but Howard was slow getting the ball out of his glove and Johnson was able to slide in safely.

Atlanta starter Shelby Miller pitched 6 1/3 innings and did not allow a run. He gave up seven hits, walked two and struck out eight. But he retired the side in order only twice and threw 106 pitches. Miller has allowed only two runs in 21 1/3 innings against the Phils this season.

Bullpen report
Ken Giles, who blew his second career save on June 30 against Milwaukee, struck out the side in his lone inning of relief.

Garcia pitched out of a mess in the ninth inning. The Braves had runners on the corners after a walk and a hit, but he got Pedro Ciriaco on a fly to shallow center and struck out Juan Uribe to end the inning.

Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth inning in a non-save situation.

At the plate
The frustration started in the first inning. The Phils loaded the bases but failed to score when Cody Asche struck out to end the threat.

Asche was 0-for-4 and is now 2-for-25 against Atlanta this season. He also popped out to the catcher with a runner at second in the fourth inning and grounded out to shortstop with a runner at second in the eighth inning.

Hernandez extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the third. He was 3-for-4 and stole his 10th and 11th bases.

Odubel Herrera extended his hitting streak to six games with a sharp double in the fifth. But Herrera was picked off when he wandered away from the base during a bunt attempt by Hernandez and got thrown out at third. Hernandez then singled with the bases empty.

Galvis singled in the third and has hit in seven straight games.

In the field
Hernandez saved a run when he ranged behind the bag to stop the grounder from A.J. Pierzynski from getting through. Hernandez then threw behind Cameron Maybin, who had taken a wide turn at third, but Franco missed Maybin with the tag. It turned out to be without consequence, as Hamels retired the next batter to end the inning.

When the Braves had runners on the corners in the ninth with one out, the Phillies brought Asche in from left and stationed him behind the second base bag. The five-man infield set up turned out to be no factor, since Garcia got a harmless popup for the second out. That allowed Asche to return to left field.
