CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The field of candidates for jobs in the Phillies' bullpen has been reduced by one. Before the team's first spring workout Wednesday, GM Ruben Amaro Jr. announced that the club had parted ways with reliever Juan Cruz.
Cruz had agreed with the team on a minor league contract earlier this winter and received an invite to major league camp. The pitcher believed his chances of making the club would be hampered by the recent signing of Chad Durbin to a major league contract. Cruz's representatives spoke to Amaro about the situation, and the two sides mutually agreed to go their separate ways.
Cruz, who has extensive major league experience, including time with the Pittsburgh Pirates last year, becomes a free agent and can sign wherever he wants.
