Salisbury's Instant Replay: Phils 4, Padres 1

Share

BOX SCORE
SAN DIEGOThe Phillies dominance at Petco Park improved to 13 straight wins with their 4-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night.

The Phils have not lost in San Diego since 2008 and their pitchers have given up just seven runs in their last 86 innings at Petco Park, dating to 2010.

The Phils are 7-7. San Diego is 3-12.

Starting pitching report
Despite not being at his sharpest, Cole Hamels held the Padres to one run over six innings in picking up his seventh win in 12 career starts against San Diego. Hamels allowed six hits, a walk and struck out four. He is 2-1 with a 2.95 ERA in three starts this season.

Hamels was called for two balks, the most by a Phillies pitcher in one game since Paul Quantrill also had two on July 15, 1995 at Montreal.

San Diego righthander Edinson Volquez (0-2) held the Phils scoreless for six innings before they got to him in the seventh.

Bullpen report
Jose Contreras, who had elbow surgery in September, made his first appearance since June 19 and pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Chad Qualls pitched a scoreless eighth and Jonathan Papelbon a scoreless ninth for his fifth save in as many tries.

Volquez left with the bases loaded and a 1-0 lead with no outs in the seventh. The Phils got two hits off hard-throwing Andrew Cashner to take the lead.

At the plate
Brian Schneider drove in the Phils first run with a bases-loaded single off Cashner on a 99-mph fastball. Two batters later, Juan Pierre drove in two runs with a single.

Entertaining scene in the eighth: Shane Victorino was denied first base after umpire Dan Bellino ruled that he intentionally leaned into an 0-2 pitch. Victorino, who was on his way to first, resumed his at-bat and hit a bullet home run to left to give the Phils a 4-1 lead.

In the field
Hamels was supported by excellent defense. Schneider, starting at catcher in place of Carlos Ruiz (sore left wrist), pounced on a bunt and gunned down a runner at third in the second inning and second baseman Freddy Galvis and rightfielder Hunter Pence made standout plays in the third inning. In the fourth, Hamels sprang off the mound and made a glove-hand flip to Schneider to cut down a run on a squeeze bunt attempt.

Health check
Ruiz could miss another game Saturday as he gets treatment for a sore left wrist (see story).

Ryan Howard did not see a doctor on Friday. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Howard would see the doctor on Monday instead (see story).

Up next
Roy Halladay (3-0, 1.17) opposes lefty Cory Luebke (1-1, 3.71) on Saturday night. First pitch is 8:35 p.m.
