Three key games for Tuesday trifecta

Share

Here we go again: Another Philly sports trifecta and every game has significant meaning.

No game appears bigger than Game 5 between the Flyers and Devils, with the season on the line for the orange and black. However, you could make the argument that a Sixers win in Chicago could have a greater impact on that franchise than how a Flyers win would impact that franchise.

It's been nine years since the Sixers won a playoff series and 27 years since the Sixers won four straight playoff games. Winning this series, especially over a number one seed for only the fifth time in NBA history, would have a lasting effect on a franchise looking to build something special.

The Flyers already have something special; they just aren't playing like it. How a team can play so well in one series and so poorly in the next is mind boggling. The Flyers' young nucleus will only get better, which should translate into multiple opportunities for a Stanley Cup run. I know it doesn't lessen the disappointment in their effort so far against the Devils, but the series isn't over and the future looks bright in the coming years.

While both the Sixers and Flyers are looking to reach, or even unleash, their potential, the Phillies are just trying to stay above water and within reach of the division lead, while Ryan Howard and Chase Utley rehab their respective injuries. Much the same as against the Nationals, the Mets are pointing at this week's series at Citizens Bank Park as a statement series to show the big bad Phillies that they no longer strike fear in the NL East.

After losing Monday night in stunning fashion to the Mets (see story), the Phillies need to flex their muscles. The goal is to play close to .500 on the road and take care of business at home and the Phils will survive until reinforcements arrive. So far the Phillies are 9-10 on the road and just 5-6 at home. Establishing home field especially against division rivals is imperative.

So there you have it, three key games for the best sports city in America. Enjoy the trifecta.
