SportsNite: Rationale for Mathis' raise request

It took Evan Mathis seven NFL seasons to find a long-term home, but he played at such a high level for the Eagles in 2011 that they rewarded him after the season with a five-year, $25.5 million contract.

Two years, a Pro Bowl selection and All-Pro nod later, Mathis wants a new deal, sources told CSNPhilly.com on Wednesday.

"This is an interesting situation because this is another guy who's got years left on his deal," Eagles insider Geoff Mosher said Wednesday evening on "SportsNite."

"[Mathis] is two years into a negotiation, things are supposed to be going hunky-dory as far as the Eagles are concerned, and now he wants to be paid. But rememeber, the Eagles set a precedent here. They extended Todd Herremans two years ago, they just extended Jason Peters, he's over 30. Evan Mathis looks around and says 'Hey, I'm a Pro Bowler, I'm playing at a higher level than anyone at offensive guard, I deserve to be compensated again."

Mathis has missed just one game the last three seasons, and has long been a darling of the advanced analysis website Pro Football Focus, making their All-NFL team in both 2011 and 2012.
