In a search for back line depth, the Union stumbled on treasure.

On Tuesday, the Union announced they have signed 23-year-old Drexel University alum and center back trialist Ken Tribbett.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We have always valued Ken’s ability and potential, which was a prime reason we were so adamant to keep him within our organization,” Union sporting director Earnie Stewart said.

The center back, who was on trial with the Union, was originally signed to play in the USL with the expansion Bethlehem Steel, but impressed his way to a contract. More surprising, however, is that Tribbett might actually earn a starting spot.

As it stands, the Union back line features Fabinho at left back, Richie Marquez at center back and Ray Gaddis on the right side. The battle for the second CB spot is between Anderson, rookie Joshua Yaro and Tribbett, who might have the inside track.

“Once camp started, Ken displayed a next level in his game and it became evident he needed to be a permanent fixture with our first team,” Stewart said. “We’re delighted with his progress and we believe in his ability to make an impact for our club this year.”

Tribbett played in PDL for the Michigan Bucks in 2014 and with the Harrisburg City Islanders in 2015. He played for Drexel from 2010 through 2013.
