The Union made another roster move Monday, signing 23-year-old defender/midfielder Matt Kassel to a deal.
Kassel, a native of Bridgewater, N.J., played with the Union this preseason after spending last season with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL. He scored six goals in 18 appearances with the Riverhounds.
In three years at the University of Maryland, Kassel scored 11 goals and had 24 assists in 68 appearances. His performance with the Terrapins earned him First-Team All-ACC honors as a junior in 2010 and All-ACC Freshman Team honors in Maryland’s 2008 National Championship season.
Kassel got his first taste of the MLS in 2011, when he signed with the New York Red Bulls.
The Union have also scheduled an exhibition match against Reading United A.C., their PDL player development affiliate, on Friday, June 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Don Thomas Stadium in Reading, Pa.
The game will mark the fourth meeting between the two clubs since they became partners in 2009. Currently, there are three former Reading United players on the Union's roster (forward Aaron Wheeler, defender Ray Gaddis, and midfielder Leo Fernandes).
