Michal Neuvirth has a new mask — let's hope it helps him stop more pucks.
Neuvirth will debut a new lid Saturday night, when the Flyers return to game action after their five-day bye week against the New Jersey Devils at the Wells Fargo Center.
The new mask pays tribute to Flyers goaltending greats, such as Bernie Parent (two Stanley Cups), Ron Hextall (current GM, 1987 Vezina Trophy and Conn Smythe Trophy winner) and Roman Cechmanek (why not?). Neuvirth will get the start tonight over Steve Mason.
In 13 games — 10 starts — this season, Neuvirth is 6-3 with a 3.30 goals-against average and .877 save percentage. Don't read too much into Neuvirth's start tonight, however.
The Flyers have a back-to-back beginning tonight, against New Jersey and the New York Islanders. The safe bet is to see Mason in net on Sunday night in Brooklyn.
But tonight, keep an eye out to see if Neuvirth can make a Cechmanek-esque head save.
