Larry Brown is just weeks away from perhaps taking Southern Methodist University to the NCAA tournament -- assuming the Mustangs stop losing to teams like Temple and USF on the road.
Brown was back in Philly last Sunday when No. 23 SMU lost at the Liacouras Center.
After the game and before exiting the media room, Brown made a specific point to address Allen Iverson.
Brown said he won't be able to make the retirement ceremony on March 1, but ...
"I'm not going to be there on Allen's day, and I'm sick. We've got a game and I can't get the TV people to change the time.
"But I just want to say this since I have a group here. I know a lot of people think we banged heads and stuff like that, but I know God put me here to coach him. He might not think that, but I feel that way. The more I'm away from it, and the more I meet young people, and people stop me everywhere, I realize the impact he had on our game. I'm thrilled that you guys are doing it (the jersey retirement) for him, because nobody deserves it more than he does. And in this community, I think he was accepted the right way, and that makes me feel great."
Iverson's former Sixers teammates George Lynch and Eric Snow are assistants on Brown's SMU staff.
And another one of his former Sixers is coaching a team in Brown's new conference. Kevin Ollie has the UConn Huskies ranked 21st in the nation, 21-5 overall and 9-4 in the American.
Brown's SMU team is visiting Ollie and UConn up in Storrs on Sunday.
Larry Brown just came over and chatted with the student section, so that was pretty cool.

Brown: "I watch you guys all the time, you're the best. You guys take good care of Kevin [Ollie]. And don't let a referee kick his ass out." — Matt Stypulkoski (@M_Stypulkoski) February 23, 2014

Just Larry Brown chatting up some college kids. Shame he's not wearing this.
