The way the ball has been bouncing for Philly sports lately I fully anticipated Albert Pujols winning the NL MVP honors. When all else fails, we still have Ryan Howard. Howard today was named the National League MVP. Howard received 20 first place votes with Pujols receiving 12.
After being named the top rookie in 2005, Howard
elevated his performance to a new level in 2006. He had a
.313 batting average, led the major leagues with 58 homers and
149 RBI, earned his first All-Star berth and also captured the
Home Run Derby championship over All-Star weekend.
Congratulations are in order for The Big Guy. Howard becomes the first Phillie since Michael Jack Schmidt in 1986 to take home the award.
The Phillies missed the playoffs again in 2006, but the excitement Howard gave to us this season is a reason you are a Philly fan. Take a look at our Ryan Howard archive for some of the more memorable moments of 2006.
