Sports Hernia Strikes Again, Briere Out 4 Weeks (But Flyers Win!)

Yep. Another sports hernia has taken a key Philly athlete out of the lineup. With Kevin Curtis set to return to the Eagles active squad on Sunday, the Flyers played their first game without Danny Briere, who will undergo  surgery for the dreaded sports hernia. It's believed he'll be out 3-4 weeks.

Briere was off to a solid start, so some other Flyers will need to step up to keep pace with all the goals they're seeing in their own end. Oddly enough, the team won for the first time this season on Friday night, beating the Devils 6-3. It was their first win in Jersey since March of 2004.

Jeff Carter stayed hot, scoring his fifth of the season. Simon Gagne also netted his fifth, and Mike Knuble, Joffrey Lupul, and Scott Hartnell also scored, with Hartnell adding a second goal into the empty net. After being boarded by a hit that resulted in a significant 5-minute penalty, Riley Cote had an endurance battle with Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond, the very guy who took the horrendously dumb major penalty.

Captain Mike Richards had four assists on the night (a career high), and the Flyers finally have one in the win column.

Already depleted due to injuries on the blue line, losing Briere for a month could be devastating. But if tonight's any indication, the Flyers aren't interested in any excuses to keep losing.
