Today in Philly Sports History: Lefty & Al Bundy Go Together Like a Horse and Carriage, 1992

Steve Carlton had a career full of prestigious accomplishments, many of which we've gone over repeatedly in this column--All-Star Games, Cy Youngs, World Series Appearances, and Hall of Fame Inductions all among them. But it's one feat he accomplished after his baseball career wound down that none of his peers--not Tom Seaver, not Nolan Ryan, not even Bert Blyleven--could ever hope to match. On January 19th, 1992, Steve Carlton made a cameo appearance in an episode of Married With Children.

Lefty's televisual acting debut didn't require him to stretch himself too much, basically just asking the pitching legend to look annoyed at Al for about fifteen seconds, then hitting him in the head with a baseball. The episode is centered around Al filming a spot for his shoe store, which involves a number of sporting legends humiliating and physically brutalizing Bundy, including the Phillies' old #32 (though the uniform he wears appears to be a weird Giants-Phillies hybrid) tossing the ol' beanball. For what it's worth, Carlton does a decent job of acting mildly irritated, a role he presumably perfected in a couple decades' worth of post-game conferences.
