Who Is Sean Jones?

Time to get to know the latest free agent visit, because it's being reported the safety has agreed to a one-year deal with the Eagles.

The 27-year-old and former second round pick out of Georgia was a three year starter at strong safety for the Browns where he actually compiled some impressive numbers, including 14 interceptions, though coverage is surprisingly considered his weakness.  At 6'1" and 220 lbs., Jones is a physical safety who is excellent in run support, but he does not have the greatest speed.

However, he does seem to have a nose for the football.  He was coming off a knee injury this past season which may have limited his range.  Jones was also a quarterback in high school and is said to be intelligent, so maybe he does not have the most athleticism, but understands where he needs to be.

As a one year flier, it's a smart move.  Jones hasn't had the opportunity to play in a quality defense, and who knows, maybe he'll shine here.  He played free safety in college, so they have the flexibility to keep Mikell at strong if they desire, or flip them.  And if they decide Demps is their guy or they choose to go in another direction, Jones is simply gone at the end of the season.

In terms of big time free agent acquisitions, this probably doesn't excite the fanbase, but it's a solid move in wake of the last weekend's disaster.

More on the injury Jones suffered the past season:

Jones missed a month last season recovering from arthroscopic surgery
on his right knee; he initially experienced swelling in the knee during
the preseason, rested and played the season opener before being
sidelined for the next four games.

“I think the knee injury just had something to do with it,” general
manager Tom Heckert said. “You watch the first couple games this year,
when he got back from the knee injury, and he wasn’t 100 percent. Then
at the very end, he started to get back. We obviously watched a lot of
2007 tape on him, and he’s a good player.”
