Transcript
You know Jim Charlie -- contract situation is one that you've been following pretty closely. And essentially Charlie's heading into the final seasons of his contract which in any sphere means he's a lame duck Andy Reid. Wasn't given an extension and we saw how that worked out with the former Eagles head coach so. Jim will this be an issue this season for the Phillies Gary. I don't see it being an issue at least initially maybe down the road could be an issue but in camp know if you recall two years ago. Charlie you know negotiated a contract extension in spring training it was a kind of a big deal it was an issue. This year he is not even dropped pushing for contract extension tells me. That he is content where he is he's kind of content to ride this thing out and evaluate where he is in his life in his managerial career. At the end of the season 69 years -- I still think that the chance that he retires after the season. But I don't think he wants to come in and say that he's gonna do that he doesn't want a farewell tour he doesn't want to lose authority in that clubhouse by having people thinking he's coasting. But if they get off to a difficult start. It could be an issue early because now Ryan Sandberg who is the heir apparent is coaching third base so. If they don't play well it might be an issue if they play well I don't see it being an issue at all. Adds -- -- Charlie's pushing seventy and some people can say that you kind of set your ways as you get older so. Does -- need to change his philosophy given his rosters aging and has dealt with injuries. It's not like he can consistently ran out Holliday and leave for nine innings and Utley and Howard. We'll need some rest can Charlie change at all. Well you you kind of hit it right on the head by saying he set in his ways he is very set in his ways and Charlie. You know Charlie's got his big guns and he likes to -- from the -- is not -- he wants me in there every day. But I do think he's gonna have to adjust that Jimmy Rollins Chase Utley up the middle are now 34. You know Doc Holliday is going to be 36 in May -- shoulder issues last year. I think Charlie has to be a little more judicious with the the playing time of his core players and I think this year he has the ability to do that. Especially with the starting pitchers he now has a deeper bullpen -- I think he'll feel more comfortable going to in the seventh and a thing. He also has -- get all of us who can fill in at three infield positions so he can spell oddly he can -- Michael Young he can spell Jimmy Rollins. Try to keep them fresh for the long haul earlier dropped Bryant Sam bird's name was in AAA most of last season all of last season and others have plenty of turnover with the coaching sentences. The left and who's here now. What will that new blood make much of a difference at all. I'm not sure but you're right there's a lot of turnover as we see there. Not sure that makes a big difference I do think there was a desire on the part of the organization get a little younger on the coaching staff and they have certainly done that. We see Ryan Sandberg there. Heisman coached third base a move that I really like this edition of rod Nichols as bullpen coach longtime minor league pitching coaches had a lot of these kids. On the way up he's very familiar with them and they've added two hitting coaches. To an area that they need to improve on offense. But you know where where the biggest improvement is gonna come offensively having a healthy Chase Utley having healthy. Ryan Howard I don't care you have the best hitting coach in the world. If you're number three and four hitters are on the bench you're not going to get that good offensively so. The best addition that can happen to this team is having healthy talent twelve -- money with -- predictions when it comes to the Phillies but no one else is he's counting down the days of spring training right now -- -- website season Philly dot com be sure to check it out. Jim as always thanks to -- but thank you to me.
