Future Phillies Report: 1B Rhys Hoskins hot at Lakewood

Share

We continue our weekly check-in on the Phillies’ future down at the farm.

We all know about J.P. Crawford’s promotion to Double A and Aaron Nola pitching well with competition at Reading, but let’s start with a first baseman drafted by the Phillies in 2014 that’s smoking the ball at Single A Lakewood.

Rhys Hoskins, 1B, Single A Lakewood
Hoskins, a 22-year-old, righty-swinging first baseman is having himself a season with the BlueClaws. He sure had himself a week, going 14 for 29 (.483) with a home run, two doubles, six RBIs and 19 total bases. Hoskins, who was drafted in the fifth round of the 2014 draft out of Cal State Sacramento, is slashing .335/.415/.524 at Single Lakewood with six home runs and 33 RBIs. Hoskins leads the South Atlantic League in OPS (.939) and is tied for third in hitting with teammate Carlos Tocci. Looks like he could be headed to High A ball in Clearwater with Tocci in the near future.

Brock Stassi, 1B, Double A Reading
Speaking of first basemen, Stassi, a 33rd-round draft pick in 2011, has flown under the radar at prospect-studded Reading. But the 25-year-old is hitting .340, good for third in the Eastern League, with six homers and 41 RBIs in 47 games, tops in the league, with the Fightin Phils. Last week, Stassi went 10 for 24 (.417), and on the season, he has as many walks (20) as strikeouts.

J.P. Crawford, SS, Double A Reading
The Phillies’ top-ranked prospect is getting closer. After hitting .392 at Single A Clearwater, Crawford was promoted to Double A Reading on Friday and made his highly publicized debut Saturday night in Baseballtown. The 20-year-old Crawford, baseball’s fourth-ranked prospect by ESPN’s Keith Law, is 3 for 11 (.278) in his first three games at Reading with a double and three walks. He and centerfielder Roman Quinn make for one exciting top of the order.

Aaron Nola, RHP, Double A Reading
The team’s top pitching prospect started the week with his worst start since April 11. How bad was it? Five innings of three-run ball. That’s how good Nola has been with the Fightin Phils. And he then came back on Sunday and tossed seven innings of one-run ball, while striking out seven and walking none in Reading’s 4-3 win over Richmond. In 10 starts, Nola is 6-3 with a 1.81 ERA, 50 strikeouts and seven walks. Some healthy competition in the Fightin Phils’ big-name rotation is helping fuel Nola’s dominance.

Ricardo Pinto, RHP, Single A Lakewood
Pinto, the Phillies' 11th-ranked prospect by MLB.com, earned Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Week honors after throwing seven innings without allowing an earned run and striking out seven in Lakewood's 2-1 win over Greensboro on Saturday. Pinto has a fastball-changeup-slider repertoire and attacks hitters. He's 5-1 in nine starts with a 2.68 ERA, 54 strikeouts and 13 walks.

Phillippe Aumont, RHP, Triple A Lehigh Valley
After his eight-walk performance, Aumont's command got no better his next start. The right-hander walked six and hit two batsmen in just 3 2/3 innings of the IronPigs' 3-0 loss to Gwinnett. Aumont had many buzzing about his early success as a starter, but he's taken a step back with two nightmare outings featuring 14 walks and two hit batsmen in 8 2/3 innings.

Domonic Brown, RF, Triple A Lehigh Valley
We'll keep you posted on Brown, why not? Last week, he went 6 for 24 (.250) with two doubles, four RBIs and seven strikeouts. Through 41 total games with the IronPigs this season, Brown is hitting .249 without a home run. The Phillies' outfield picture is already clouded, so who knows when Brown will be back. Some power would help, though.

Aaron Brown, CF, Single A Clearwater
Brown is finding his stroke with the Threshers. The Phillies' 22nd-ranked prospect by MLB.com is riding a seven-game hitting streak in which he's driven in seven runs. Since May 15, he's 20 for 54 (.370), raising his batting average from .190 to .263. Brown was drafted by the Phillies in the third round of the 2014 draft out of Pepperdine.

Zach Eflin, RHP, Double A Reading
Eflin was rocked last Wednesday, giving up eight runs on 12 hits in three innings. Incredibly, Reading still won, 12-10, over New Hampshire by banging out 21 hits. The 21-year-old rebounded well today, throwing seven innings and allowing two runs on two hits and four walks. Eflin is 4-4 in 10 starts with a 3.38 ERA.

Roman Quinn, CF, Double A Reading
Quinn is keeping things up at Reading, as he has seven hits in his last three games and is hitting .314 on the season. He leads the Eastern League in stolen bases (24) and is tied for first in runs scored (35).
