Joe Douglas completes interview with Jets for GM job

The Jets announced on Sunday that they have completed their interview with Joe Douglas for their vacant GM position.

Before interviewing Douglas, the Jets also interviewed Seahawks executive Scott Fitterer and Saints executive Terry Fontenot. The Jets are still expected to interview Champ Kelly from the Bears and possibly George Paton from the Vikings.

But Douglas, the Eagles’ vice president of player personnel, is considered to be the favorite to land the job.

If Douglas wants this job and they offer him enough money, it’s hard to imagine there’s much the Eagles can do to keep him. Sure, they could offer him a bunch of money and perhaps give him a new title and a “promotion” but no matter what they call him, he’ll never really be in charge here. Howie Roseman is implanted firmly ahead of him in the pecking order.

If hired in New York, Douglas would replace Mike Maccagnan, who was fired after the draft. Douglas and Jets head coach and interim GM Adam Gase worked together for a year in Chicago and have a good relationship. Douglas is reportedly Gase’s pick for the job.

Douglas has been with the Eagles since May 2016, when he was hired to run the personnel department under Roseman. By all accounts, the two have worked extremely well together over the last few years and with Douglas’ help, the Eagles have reached great levels of success, obviously topped by the Super Bowl at the end of the 2017 season. The Eagles have prepared themselves to lose Douglas, but that won’t make it any easier to replace him.

"At some point, we are going to lose executives," Eagles owner Jeff Lurie said in March. "When you’re winning, you’re going to lose executives. I think we’re in a great position to be able to deal with that. We don’t want to put a cap on how many good executives we have in football operations. That would be a competitive mistake."
