Reggie White and Clyde Simmons easy picks as all-time Eagles team defensive ends

Throughout July, we're unveiling our all-time Eagles team.

We enlisted the help of Eagles reporters Reuben Frank and Dave Zangaro, Quick Slants hosts Derrick Gunn and Barrett Brooks and Quick Slants producer Mike Mulhern to handle the voting.

Each voter ranked his top five players at 16 different positions. A 1st-place vote was worth five points, a 2nd-place vote was worth four, and so on.

Up today: Defensive End

Complete voting

1. Reggie White = 25
2. Clyde Simmons = 20
3. Hugh Douglas = 11
4. Trent Cole = 9
5. William Fuller = 4
6. Marion Campbell = 3
6. Brandon Graham = 3

The breakdown

Not surprising that Reggie White was a unanimous first choice. When you take into account his peerless pass-rush ability and incredible ability against the run, the guy was the greatest defensive end of all time.

Interesting though that his long-time teammate, Clyde Simmons, who played alongside White from 1986 through 1992, was a unanimous second choice, with all five 2nd-place votes. The 3rd-place votes were spread among Hugh Douglas (2), Trent Cole (1) and William Fuller (1), with Hugh getting the nod over Trent for the No. 3 spot.

Did we get it right?

Reggie and Clyde are no-brainers. You can make a pretty good case for Cole over Hugh for the No. 3 spot, though. Trent spent 10 years here and averaged just under 9 sacks per season. He made two Pro Bowls and had seven seasons with at least 8.0 sacks. Hugh made three Pro Bowls but had only four full seasons as a regular player here. Trent averaged about three fewer sacks per year as an Eagle than Hugh but had more than twice as many productive seasons. He also gave you more against the run.
