Ryan Howard agrees to minor-league deal with Rockies

After going unsigned for three months, Ryan Howard agreed to a minor-league deal Saturday with the Colorado Rockies. It is unclear to which Rockies affiliate Howard will report.

The Phillies declined Howard's team option last fall. Howard was without a team until April, when he inked a minor-league contract with the Atlanta Braves. He batted .184 with one home run and 11 strikeouts in 38 at-bats for Triple A Gwinnett before the Braves released him on May 6.

Howard hit 25 home runs in a limited role for the Phillies last season, but he batted just .196 while losing the first base job to Tommy Joseph by midseason. The 37-year-old slugger spent all 13 of his MLB seasons with the Phillies.

Rockies first basemen are 10th in baseball with a .842 OPS. They've struggled some in the second half with Ian Desmond on the disabled list and Mark Reynolds dealing with a hand injury.
