Bernie Parent among 9 Flyers on NHL's top 100 players of all time list

Bernie Parent is of hockey legend in Philadelphia — as he should be.

Parent is the only goaltender to lead the Flyers to a Stanley Cup, and he did it twice in back-to-back seasons — 1974, 1975. He won the Vezina and Conn Smythe trophies in both years, too. And now, 42 years later, Parent can add another feat to his résumé.

As part of its top 100 greatest players of all time list, the NHL on Friday included Parent, when it revealed the final 67 players in Los Angeles during the All-Star weekend. The other 37 players were named on Jan. 1 at the Centennial Classic in Toronto.

In all, nine players were on the list, including Bobby Clarke, Eric Lindros, Peter Forsberg, Jaromir Jagr, Adam Oates, Chris Pronger, Paul Coffey and Darryl Sittler.

"Just think about this — there were a lot of great players who have played in this league and to be selected as one of the top 100, what an honor this is," Parent said.

"It is just incredible. When I received the phone call from Gary Bettman, at first I wondered why he would be calling me. Then, when he gave me the news, it was just unbelievable. When you look back at my career, what a beautiful ride it has been.

"Having spent most of my career in Philly and being on the team that won two Stanley Cups and then to get honored like this, it is just very difficult to find the proper words to describe my emotions."
