Brian Kelly: Chip Kelly ‘gets killed' for having complete control

Sour grapes?

Way back in 2013, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly interviewed for the Eagles' head coaching position.

Beaten out by Chip Kelly, Brian doesn't appear eager to try again for an NFL head coaching job.

In an interview with Blue and Gold Illustrated (via NFL.com), Brian said he has no desire to fight for the autonomy he currently has at Notre Dame.

"I get to pick the players that play for me, I get to negotiate the contracts. I've got the salary cap. I've got all that," he said. "In the NFL, you don't get to do any of that. Look (at) what Chip Kelly's going through. He tries to control all that and he gets killed for it. I can do all that here at Notre Dame."

"Killed" seems a little strong. Criticism could reach that level if the Eagles fail to make the playoffs for the next couple of seasons, but for now, the questions center on whether the Eagles gave Chip too much control too quickly. Considering he's entering his third season with the Eagles — and in the NFL — it's certainly a valid question.

What's more, in a bit of irony, Brian has adopted one of Chip's mantras.

You may remember Chip uttering the "culture beats scheme" line during a Giants game last year while wearing an NBC microphone. That was also the time he had some fun with a referee too.

Now Brian has made the phrase his team's motto and even had a T-shirt created.

Looks like Brian owes Chip a beer or two. Or a cut if those shirts go on sale.
