Chris Clemons Out, Rotational Defensive End X In

Update: PFT reporting the Eagles have already reached an extension with new acquisition Darryl Tapp. Jeff McLane says it's a three-year deal.

Nobody is going to be sad to see Chris Clemons go. The Eagles have swapped defensive ends with the Seahawks, acquiring former Virginia Tech second round pick Darryl Tapp in exchange for Clemons and a fourth rounder. The price seems steep for Tapp, who had 7.0 sacks in in '07, but since then lost his starting job and managed to reach the quarterback a whopping 2.5 times last season.

Signed primarily as a third down pass rusher, Clemons managed to accumulate just 7.0 sacks in two 16 game seasons, one short of the total he posted in '07 with the Raiders. They really aren't losing anything there.

A fourth round pick for Tapp is a lot though. Entering his fifth season, Tapp's totals have been on the decline since a breakthrough sophomore campaign. At best, it appears the Eagles are picking up another situational player, when what they really need is somebody opposite Trent Cole who can consistently beat their man.

My only guess is, this being a contract year for Tapp after signing his restricted free agent tender yesterday, the Eagles are hoping to see his full potential this season in a brand new scheme. We don't really know too much about him yet, but it's hard to believe he'll be the answer they are searching for.
