Jarvis Varnado hopes to remain with Sixers

NEW YORK -- Jarvis Varnado’s future is up in the air.

Monday marked the final day of his 10-day contract with the Sixers. Varnado could sign a second 10-day deal if the team decides to make him an offer, but prior to Monday’s opening tip against the Knicks, Varnado had no idea which way the team was leaning.

“I want to play,” Varnado said. ”I hope they allow me to sign a second 10-day contract. Coach [Brett Brown] is real on me and I like being here.”

Since arriving March 1, Varnado has appeared in four games. He has grabbed a total of 15 rebounds and blocked three shots in 50 minutes.

“I wish we could get a few wins,” Varnado said. “I am enjoying playing for coach, but I am still preparing for whatever happens. Hopefully I am a Sixer tomorrow.”

Brown said he hopes Varnado remains with the team (see story).

If Monday is his last game with the team, Varnado said he was not going to put any extra pressure on himself when he took the court at Madison Square Garden.

“I need to go out there and play my game and do what I do best,” Varnado said. “That is rebound, block shots and be disruptive on the defensive end and bring a lot of energy. No added pressure.”

Varnado signed a 10-day contract with the Bulls back in February. Prior to that, the 6-foot-9, 230-pound forward was playing in the D-League.
