NEW YORK — Bobby Parnell is back with the New York Mets following Tommy John surgery despite subpar performances during his injury rehabilitation stint in the minor leagues.

The former closer was activated from the 15-day disabled list Thursday by the Mets, who placed right-hander Dillon Gee on the bereavement list following the death of his grandmother.

Parnell was injured on March 31 last year in the season opener against Washington, and the right-hander had reconstructive elbow surgery on April 8.

He was 0-4 with an 11.57 ERA in 15 minor league appearances, striking out 11 and walking 14 in 14 innings. Opponents had a .373 batting average against him.

In addition, infielder Dilson Herrera was activated from the disabled list and infielder Ruben Tejada was placed on the paternity leave list after the birth of a daughter.

Nationals acquire reliever David Carpenter
MILWAUKEE — The Washington Nationals have acquired right-handed reliever David Carpenter from the New York Yankees for minor league second baseman Tony Renda.

The Nationals announced the deal Thursday before their game at the Milwaukee Brewers.

Washington also transferred outfielder Nate McClouth from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL and the team said it would make another move later Thursday to make room on the 25-man roster for Carpenter.

Carpenter was designated for assignment by the Yankees on June 3, after going 0-1 with a 4.82 ERA in 22 games this season.

He is 11-11 with a 2.73 ERA in 210 career appearances for four major league clubs.

Renda was a second-round draft pick in 2012.

Yankees: Andrew Miller placed on DL
NEW YORK — The Yankees have recalled outfielder Mason Williams and right-hander Chris Martin from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and put closer Andrew Miller on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left forearm.

Williams, selected by New York in the fourth round of the 2010 amateur draft, could make his major league debut. The 23-year-old started the season at Double-A Trenton and hit .317 with 11 RBIs and 11 steals in 34 games, then was promoted to Scranton and batted .321 with 11 RBIs in 20 games.

New York optioned outfielder Ramon Flores to Scranton on Wednesday.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi revealed Miller's injury Wednesday and said the left-hander will not throw for 10 days to two weeks. Miller, whose DL stint is retroactive to Wednesday, is perfect in 17 chances in his first season with New York.

Martin was 0-1 with his first big league save and a 3.55 ERA in 15 relief appearances before going on the disabled list on May 9 because of tendinitis in his right elbow. He made an injury rehabilitation appearance at Scranton on May 30, then was optioned to the RailRiders the following day and has pitched in three more games.

In addition, right-hander Ivan Nova's rehabilitation assignment was transferred to Scranton, where he is scheduled to start Saturday. Nova, recovering from Tommy John surgery in April 2014, could be back with the Yankees next week.

Padres: Wil Myers activated
ATLANTA — The San Diego Padres activated Wil Myers from the 15-day disabled list Thursday after he missed 28 games with tendinitis in his left wrist.

Myers, the Padres' regular centerfielder and leadoff hitter, is batting .291 with five homers and 19 RBIs.

Reliever Kevin Quackenbush was optioned to Triple-A El Paso to make room for Myers on the 25-man roster.

Myers, sidelined since May 11, has hit .361 in 25 at-bats with runners in scoring position.

Mariners: Nelson Cruz out with back spasms
CLEVELAND — Seattle Mariners slugger Nelson Cruz, who leads the American League with 18 home runs, was out of the lineup for the second straight game because of back spasms.

Cruz didn't play Wednesday after his back tightened up during an at-bat in Tuesday's series opener. He hoped to play Thursday against the Cleveland Indians, but Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon decided to give him another day off.

Cruz, who is batting .326 with 39 RBIs in 58 games, could return Friday against Houston.

Kyle Seager, who hit a grand slam and drove in five runs from the cleanup spot Wednesday in a 9-3 win, batted fourth again.
