Press Taylor already has a new job, according to report

The Indianapolis Eagles and Philadelphia Colts continue to come together.

After the Eagles hired Nick Sirianni away from Frank Reich’s staff and after Sirianni brought several coaches with him to Philadelphia this offseason, Indy is getting one back in return.

Former quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Press Taylor is expected to join the staff in Indianapolis, according to SI’s Albert Breer.

So if you’re keeping track at home, the Colts hired Frank Reich in 2018 after he was on the Eagles’ staff from 2016-17. Last year, after the Eagles fired Mike Groh, Reich brought him on as their receivers coach. This offseason, the Eagles hired Reich’s offensive coordinator and then also brought in the former defensive backs coach, tight ends coach and pass game specialist from Indy.

Got all that?

It’s like the Eagles and Colts are slowly just trading their coaches to each other.

Taylor, 33, had been with the Eagles since 2013, when he was hired by Chip Kelly. He was promoted to assistant quarterbacks coach in 2016 and promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2018 after John DeFilippo left. In 2020, he was promoted again and given the additional title of passing game coordinator.

It was no surprise earlier this week when we found out Taylor would not be returning with the Eagles. In fact, Jeffrey Lurie was so displeased with Doug Pederson’s planned coaching staff, which included promoting Taylor again to offensive coordinator, that he ended up firing Pederson.

At the heart of the criticism of Taylor was the perception that he was too buddy-buddy with Carson Wentz and did not coach him hard enough like his predecessor had.

There had already been plenty of speculation about a possible Wentz trade to the Colts and this hire will only add to that. Wentz and Taylor have been very close for years and Wentz also obviously has a relationship with Reich, who was his coordinator for two seasons.
