Prospect Andy Gallik has high praise for Eagles' new QB coach

INDIANAPOLIS — We don’t know a whole lot about Ryan Day, the Eagles’ new quarterbacks coach.

He’s never coached in the NFL. He’s just 35 years old. He played under Chip Kelly at New Hampshire and also spent a year coaching with Kelly at UNH.

When the Eagles hired him on Jan. 22, they didn’t make Kelly or Day or anybody else available to talk about the hire, and they didn’t even include a quote from Kelly or Day in their press release.

So we really don't know anything at all about the guy who will be coaching Nick Foles or whoever the Eagles' quarterback is in 2015.

Enter Andy Gallik.

Gallik is one of the top centers in this year’s draft and the only Boston College player at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Day was at BC for Gallik’s entire college career, and Gallik is a big fan of the Eagles’ fourth quarterbacks coach in four years.

“I love Ryan Day,” Gallik said Friday. “He’s been there since Day 1, since I got to BC. I have tremendous respect for him. I’m very close with him. I was very excited to hear that he got the job with Philadelphia. It’s a long time deserved for him.”

Day replaces Bill Musgrave, now the Raiders’ offensive coordinator. Musgrave replaced Bill Lazor, now the Dolphins’ offensive coordinator. Each spent just one year in the role. Doug Pederson was the Eagles’ quarterbacks coach in 2012.

Day had coaching stints at UNH, Boston College, Florida and Temple before Kelly hired him last month.

“He’s very, very smart,” Gallik said. “I don’t think people realize how smart he is. One of the most intelligent coaches I’ve ever been around.

“Whenever I had question about anything, he’d have two or three different answers for me. He’d make you feel comfortable. He was one of those coaches that I could always walk into his office at anytime. He’d always be there to help you with anything you need, off the field [and] on the field.

“He was kind of like a father figure to all of the guys at BC. I’m very happy for him.”
