PST: Are defenses unafraid of Nick Foles?

Share

This isn't the same Nick Foles that protected the football and had a higher quarterback rating than Peyton Manning last season (Foles 119.2, Manning 115.1). This isn't the efficient Eagles offense last year with the NFL's leading rusher complementing a multi-dimensional Chip Kelly offense.

After ranking toward the top in many passing categories in 2013, Foles now ranks near the bottom in 2014.

Foles is 28th in the league with an 80.7 QBR. His 12 turnovers this year are second-most in the league behind the Jaguars' Blake Bortles, who has 13.

Nine of Foles' 12 turnovers are interceptions. Six of those interceptions thrown have been on passes over 20 yards.

Defenses have dared Foles to beat them vertically all season.

"That's why you see so many people stacking the box," Quintin Mikell said this week on Philly Sports Talk. "They're not afraid of the deep throw."

Foles and the Eagles suffered a tough 24-20 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, giving them only their second loss of the year. At the same time, more losses may be on the way if Foles doesn't protect the ball more. He had two interceptions all of last season. He's thrown two picks in three of his last four games. The Eagles are 2-2 in those games.

"He's no longer that young quarterback we've been talking about for the past three years," Barrett Brooks said. "He's now a veteran quarterback. He needs to step his play up."

The red zone has also been an issue for Foles and the Birds' offense. They've scored a touchdown on 34.8 percent of the opportunities this season. They're the only NFL team with a touchdown rate under 40 percent.

The difference between the Eagles being a 5-2 team and a 7-0 team has been their inability to score touchdowns at the goal line. They failed twice against the 49ers in the Week 4 loss at San Francisco and once again in Arizona last Sunday — all in the fourth quarter with a chance to take a lead.

"They're a yard and six inches from being an undefeated team in this league," Brooks said.
