SAN JOSE – Flyers forward Sam Gagner cleared waivers on Wednesday and will be loaned to the Phantoms.
The Flyers waived Gagner on Tuesday so they could gain about $300,000 in salary cap space needed to reactivate defenseman Mark Streit from long-term injury while also keeping rookie defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere on the roster.
The former first-round pick from Edmonton was acquired by the Flyers at last summer’s NHL Draft in a complicated deal with Arizona that saw them trade Chris Pronger and Nick Grossmann to the Coyotes. Arizona needed Pronger’s $4.92 million dead cap money to help them reach the salary cap floor.
Gagner carries a $3.2 million cap hit.
