Sean O'Sullivan accepts assignment, headed to AAA

Phillies starting pitcher Sean O'Sullivan has accepted his assignment and will report to Triple A Lehigh Valley, the team announced Wednesday afternoon.

O'Sullivan was outrighted off the Phils' 40-man roster Monday night after he allowed six earned runs for the third straight start.

There was simply no way for the Phils to continue to send him out every fifth day. O'Sullivan was 1-6 with a 6.08 ERA and was getting demolished by left-handed hitters, who had a .366 batting average, a 1.172 OPS, 11 doubles, 12 homers, 26 RBIs and more walks than strikeouts against him.

O'Sullivan could have elected to become a free agent, but remaining in the Phillies' organization likely gives him the best chance to return to the majors at some point this season. The Phils have not been able to find a rotation formula that has worked, and their starting pitching depth could take another hit if/when Cole Hamels and/or Aaron Harang are traded.

The 27-year-old O'Sullivan owns a 5.95 career ERA in 302⅓ big-league innings.
