Eagles sign O-lineman Jared Wheeler to 1-year deal

The Eagles on Monday signed guard/center Jared Wheeler to a one-year contract.

The Eagles opened a spot on their 90-man roster by releasing two-time Pro Bowl left guard Evan Mathis last week. Wheeler (6-5/320) has never played in an NFL game. He was last with the Seahawks, who signed him in February but released him after the draft.

Wheeler, who worked out for the Eagles on Monday, went undrafted out of Miami in 2014 and spent time in the preseason with the Bills and Panthers. He has plenty of competition to win a roster spot.

Even with Mathis gone and even though Chip Kelly didn't draft an offensive lineman for the second straight year, the Eagles have plenty of interior offensive linemen competing to make the roster.

Allen Barbre is taking Mathis' left guard spot. Matt Tobin, Andrew Gardner and Dennis Kelly are competing to fill the right guard void. Wheeler joins rookie free agents Malcolm Bunche, Brett Boyko and Cole Manhart in the mix for a backup spot.

Wheeler played 13 games his senior season at Miami, starting six. He played left guard, right guard and center. He also recorded three special teams tackles and received the school's Sports Hall of Fame Unsung Hero Award.
