MLB Notes: Jayson Werth (wrist) out indefinitely

CINCINNATI -- Washington's Jayson Werth is out indefinitely after another test found that he broke his left wrist two weeks ago.

The outfielder was hit on the wrist by a pitch from the Padres' Odrisamer Despaigne on May 16 and has been unable to swing a bat. With the injury still bothering him, he went for a CT scan Thursday -- the team's day off -- and it detected two small fractures.

"He's frustrated," manager Matt Williams said. "But again, it just didn't feel right. Something didn't feel right for him. Since it wasn't getting better, we furthered the tests."

Williams says there's no timetable for his return. The bones have to heal before he can resume swinging a bat (see full story).

Astros: Feldman out about 6 weeks
HOUSTON -- Houston right-hander Scott Feldman is expected to miss about six weeks after arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.

Feldman was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Friday after having surgery to repair a torn medial meniscus. He was injured fielding a ground ball in his last start on Tuesday. Feldman, who is in his second year in Houston, is 4-4 with a 4.80 ERA in 10 starts this year.

Manager A.J. Hinch says: "He's a really stable part of our club. So losing him for five or six weeks is a tough blow."

The Astros called up right-hander Michael Feliz from Double-A Corpus Christi to take his spot on the roster. This will be the major league debut for Feliz, who pitched just one game for Corpus Christi after being called up from Class-A Lancaster this week.

Reds: Marquis demoted to bullpen
CINCINNATI -- The Reds moved struggling starter Jason Marquis to the bullpen Friday, leaving them with three rookies in the starting rotation for now.

Marquis signed with the Reds in the offseason, continuing his comeback from Tommy John surgery. He went 3-4 with a 6.46 ERA in nine starts, prompting manager Bryan Price to rearrange his rotation for a series against the Washington Nationals on Friday.

Marquis gave up four runs and 10 hits during 5 2-3 innings of a 5-4 loss on Monday to the Rockies.

Johnny Cueto remains sidelined by inflammation in his pitching elbow, causing him to miss two starts so far. Price said the earliest he would return is a series in Philadelphia next week (see full story).

Cardinals: Jay activated but not in lineup
ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals activated outfielder Jon Jay from the 15-day disabled list but did not have him in the lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Jay was sidelined May 11 with left wrist tendinitis. While he was out, Randal Grichuk and Peter Bourjos stepped up and both were in the lineup.

Grichuk was batting cleanup and playing left field in place of Matt Holliday, who is suffering from flu-like symptoms. Bourjos started in center field, Jay's position.

Reliever Miguel Socolovich was optioned to Triple-A Memphis to get more regular work. His last outing was May 20.

The 30-year-old Jay had wrist surgery in the offseason and missed part of spring training rehabbing. He was batting .248 with six RBIs in 30 games before going on the DL and played three games for Class A Peoria in a rehab assignment, getting 10 at-bats with two starts in center and one at DH.
