After being swept by the New York Mets, the Phillies open a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park with the San Diego Padres on Friday night.

Aaron Nola will take the mound for the Phillies. Nola, who is 4-1 with a 3.58 ERA in seven starts, is coming off his best outing in the majors.

Nola tossed eight shutout innings on Sunday in the Phils' 2-0 win in Miami. He allowed three hits in the outing and struck out six.

The right-hander faced the Padres on Aug. 7 in San Diego, a 4-3 Phillies win that he didn't get a decision in. He allowed three runs on six hits over six innings.

Behind him, interim manager Pete Mackanin has Aaron Altherr starting for the second straight game. Altherr will play right field and bat third.

Altherr was 2 for 6 with two doubles and a RBI in Thursday's 9-5 loss to New York. Since coming up to the Phillies on Aug. 18, the outfielder is hitting .250 with two homers and six RBIs.

Odubel Herrera will bat second behind Cesar Hernandez. Andres Blanco is in the five-hole and playing third.

The Phillies will face Ian Kennedy (8-11, 4.01), who is 3-2 with a 3.33 ERA in seven career starts against the Phillies.
