NFL Notes: Did Manning, Saban violate rules?

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Peyton Manning's never-ending quest to hone his game and Nick Saban's desire to decipher fast-paced offenses led to a recent meeting that the Crimson Tide coach called mutually beneficial.

It also might have violated NFL rules because, according to Saban, Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase also was in attendance.

The league doesn't allow players and their coaches to meet before the start of offseason workouts, which for the Broncos begin Monday. On-field instruction won't start until mid-May.

The Associated Press left messages with the team and the NFL on Friday seeking comment (see full story).

Saints: Meachem re-signed to one-year deal
METAIRIE, La. -- New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis says the club has re-signed veteran free-agent wide receiver Robert Meachem to a one-year contract.

Meachem is entering his eighth NFL season and seventh with New Orleans. He played in 15 games last season, starting five, and caught 16 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns.

He also has three receptions for 109 yards in New Orleans' two playoff games last season.

The 6-foot-2 Meachem was the Saints' first-round draft pick, taken 27th overall, in 2007 out of Tennessee.

He has played in 92 regular season games, and has 171 receptions for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns. He has played only one season outside of New Orleans, spending the 2012 season in San Diego.

Financial terms of Meachem's contract have not been released.

Colts: Luck excited to get Wayne back
INDIANAPOLIS -- Andrew Luck is already back to work. He hopes Reggie Wayne will soon join him on the practice field.

The Colts star quarterback and Pro Bowl receiver both returned to Indianapolis on Friday for charity events, just five days before the Colts hold their first official offseason workouts.

Luck acknowledged he took a short break from football, traveling to several different countries, before spending the past six weeks getting back into football shape. Wayne is trying to return from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The two have not been able to work together yet, but they're hoping that will change.

Luck said he expects Wayne to return and be as productive as he ever has (see full story).
