BOX SCORE

ST. LOUIS — The Phillies are slowly putting together another losing streak. It reached three straight defeats in a 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium on Friday night.

The Cardinals entered the game in the throes of a seven-game losing streak, but got well against the Phillies and starter Jeremy Hellickson, who was hit hard in letting a 2-0 lead get away.

The Phillies had the tying run at third with one out in the ninth, but could not get it home. Cardinals leftfielder Tommy Pham made a tremendous defensive play to end the game.

The Phillies are 2-3 on this road trip and 9-24 on the road for the season. Their overall record of 21-38 is the worst in baseball.

Starting pitching report
Hellickson gave up 10 hits and three runs over six innings. He is now 5-4 with a 4.50 ERA in 13 starts.

The Phillies gave Hellickson a two-run lead in the top of the third inning, but he quickly let it get away in the bottom of the inning as the Cardinals tied the game on four hard-hit balls, three hits and a sacrifice fly.

The Cards took the lead on a solo homer by Aledmys Diaz against Hellickson in the fifth. Hellickson has surrendered 12 homers in his last eight starts.

Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha held the Phillies to two runs over six innings. He allowed five hits; three of them came in the Phillies' two-run third inning.

Bullpen report
Casey Fien made his Phillies debut with two scoreless innings.

St. Louis right-hander Matt Bowman, who pitched at Princeton, struck out the side in the seventh. Trevor Rosenthal pitched a scoreless eighth. Seung-hwan Oh got the save. He got the final two outs with the tying run at third.

At the plate
The Phillies showed some life with two outs in the third inning. Howie Kendrick doubled, Tommy Joseph had an RBI single and Aaron Altherr an RBI double. That was the extent of the Phillies' scoring. They wasted a leadoff double by Altherr in the second.

Odubel Herrera's streak of six straight games with an extra-base hit ended. He actually had 12 of them over that span. Herrera did have a single in the eighth inning.

The Cardinals had 11 hits. Four of them came in the third inning. Diaz's tiebreaking homer came with two outs in the fifth.

In the field
Altherr failed to make the catch on a hard-hit liner to the warning track by Matt Carpenter leading off the bottom of the third. That ignited a two-run rally for the Cardinals.

Phillies leftfielder Kendrick made a nice diving catch to end the fourth inning.

Pham, the Cardinals' leftfielder, made a diving catch on a Freddy Galvis liner to end the game. The Phillies would have tied the game if the ball had fallen in.

Transaction
The Phillies sold minor-league utility man Taylor Featherston to Tampa Bay.

Up next
The series continues on Saturday afternoon. Nick Pivetta (1-2, 5.18) opposes Cardinals right-hander Carlos Martinez (4-5, 3.29). First pitch is 2:15 p.m.
