BOX SCORE

ARLINGTON, Tex. — The Texas Rangers laid a beating on the Phillies on Wednesday night. The Rangers pounded out 17 hits in hanging a 9-3 loss on the Phillies.

The Phillies have lost 14 of their last 17 games to fall to 14-23 on the season. They are 3-11 in May.

The Rangers, meanwhile, are the hottest team in baseball. They have won eight in a row, including two in as many nights against the Phillies, to go a game over the .500 mark.

The Phils have been outscored, 14-4, in the first two games of this series.

Starting pitching report
Zach Eflin's string of four straight quality starts ended dramatically. He was tagged for 11 hits and seven runs in just four innings of work. Eflin had entered the game having allowed just one walk in his previous four starts. He allowed two in the first inning of this game.

Eflin (0-1) did not help himself with a throwing error, a wild pitch and a hit batsman. All of those miscues figured in the Rangers' scoring.

Andrew Cashner held the Phillies to two runs over seven innings for his first win of the season. The Phils got the leadoff man on in each of the first five innings against Cashner but got nothing largely because of four double plays.

Cashner is 4-1 with a 2.74 ERA in his career against the Phillies.

Bullpen report
Luis Garcia allowed six hits and two runs over three innings after Eflin departed.

At the plate
Michael Saunders' two-run homer in the seventh accounted for the Phillies' first two runs. A third scored in the ninth on a hit by Maikel Franco.

Phillies hitters saw a total of just 13 pitches against Cashner in the fifth and sixth innings.

Jared Hoying had four hits, including his first major-league homer, to lead the Rangers' attack. He was a triple shy of the cycle. Delino DeShields also had four hits, all singles.

Health check
Howie Kendrick's abdominal strain is being a little stubborn (see story).

Up next
The series concludes on Thursday afternoon with right-hander Nick Pivetta (0-2, 6.14) facing Texas lefty Martin Perez (1-5, 3.89). Pivetta will likely return to Triple A in the coming days as Aaron Nola is ready to come off the disabled list. Nola is scheduled to pitch Sunday in Pittsburgh.
